Who Invented the Bicycle and When

Who invented bicycle and when? Bicycle is a vehicle designed for human transport. It requires balancing, but it is easy to handle. Once you learn how to ride a bike, you will never forget it! The first vehicle that was similar to this description was constructed in 1817. The word “bicycle” originates from France. There are many claims for this invention. However, many of them are unverifiable. The earliest version of what we call ‘a bicycle’ was probably designed in the late 15th century, by Da Vinci’s pupil, Gian Giacomo Caprotti. Some people claim that this sketch is a fraud, but there are also historians who believe that this sketch is authentic.

Who Invented the Bicycle?

According Louis Baudry de Saunier, in 1791, an interesting vehicle was constructed and demonstrated in France, at the Palais Royal. It had 2 wheels, a wooden frame, but it didn’t have any steering. The driver had to use his feet, too. He would just push the vehicle, occasionally using his own feet for moving. This must have been funny! However, this vehicle never existed, actually. The whole story turned out to be a misinterpretation.

The first story that could be verified came from Baron Karl von Drais, who invented a machine similar to what we call ‘a bicycle’. He designed the vehicle in 1818 for commercial purposes. The vehicle had two wheels, it had steering and it was easy to manipulate. It was made in France and Germany.

This invention resulted from the need to find an appropriate substitute for horses. Crop failure in 1816 caused starvation of many horses, so people had to find the right substitute.

However, a bicycle was prohibited several decades after it’s been invented. Many accidents have been reported, so authorities had no choice but to prohibit the use of this vehicle.

Kirkpatrick MacMillan constructed the first two-wheeled vehicle that was mechanically propelled. So, this may be the answer to the question ‘who invented bicycle’. Although there were many similar devices before this one, we could say that this vehicle is the closest relative to what we call ‘a bicycle’.

In 1885, John Kemp Starley made the safety bicycle. It had two equally sized wheels and a steering wheel in the front.

Today, there are many bicycle manufacturers. Different types of bicycles are designed for different purposes. If you want to buy one, you will have to think well before you buy it. You will take some time to choose the right one. Sports bicycles are high quality vehicles, but they can also be very expensive, especially if they designed for professional bike riders.

If your kid wants a new bike, you will probably want to buy an extra-safe bike for your child. That won’t be a problem, because there are hundreds of different types in stores. New bikes come with high quality tires, and riding one of such bikes is a true pleasure. Bikes are still very popular, and riding a bicycle is a great exercise.
