Cellulitis infection is a type of skin disease, caused mostly by Group A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus bacteria. It is not dangerous if treated in time and antibiotics are enough for complete healing. However in certain cases even surgery is needed for removing necrotic.
Deciding not to take treatment can cause sepsis. Bacteria are entering the skin through cuts, breaks and abrasions. Cellulitis can be even caused by normal skin bacterial flora.
Aged people are at risk of getting cellulitis so as people with weak immune system. A half of the infected people are those with diabetes, since their immune system is weaker.
Doctor will diagnose it by taking a look at the infected place, but may also ask for a blood test, skin culture test and maybe other tests which will help in setting the diagnosis.
Cellulitis can also infect animals, mostly horses. It usually occurs in injured animals. It is a secondary infection of the wound. Infected place will swell and be hot and painful. The treatment consists of the wound cleaning with the help of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but veterinarian may also prescribe antibiotics.
