The Biggest Hamburger in the World

Who Made the Biggest One?

What is the biggest hamburger in the world? The largest hamburger in the world at 164.8lbs can be found on the menu at Mallie’s Sports Grill and Bar in Michigan but at $399US it is out of the range of most people’s budget, let alone your stomach capacity. Maille’s has held the Guinness World Record since 2008. This may surprise any newcomer to the world of competitive eating and record breaking super-size meals.

Very Large Meals

Last year, Canadian BBQ Chef Ted Reader attempted to set the new world record with a 590lbs snack that required a specially built grill and a forklift to flip the patty, which weighed in just over 300lbs alone.

Apparently it was quite edible despite taking six hours to cook (no explanation of how sanitary the cooking process was) and included all the fixings beloved by burger fanciers including red onions, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, pickles and sauce.

Now, we can appreciate the thrill of being immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records. We admire the ingenuity of the creators who figure out how to make such meals, but the question is: can’t we put our resources to better use? It’s nice that the Canadian made burger raised $8,500 for charity and some people had a lot of fun but one should be aware that a huge amount of food was wasted.

According to the World Health Organization, hunger is the single biggest threat to the world’s health. Malnutrition is by far the biggest contributor to child mortality, present in half of all cases. Figures on actual starvation are changing all the time, but 14 % of the world’s population is undernourished.

Sometimes it just seems a bit rude to make such great burgers and then just let them go to waste. We need to think about those people who do not have enough food and die because of hunger. Making the biggest hamburger in the world is definitely interesting for both the maker and the audience, but we should restrain from such competitions and donate this money and foods to those who need it more.

We are not trying to criticize anyone. On the contrary – we find this very interesting and we must show some respect for people who have enough time and skill to make such a big meal. However, one cannot help wondering how many hungry kids that hamburger can feed. Perhaps the future competitions can be organized in that manner. They can make these gigantic meals and then use them to feed those who are in famine.
