How long does it take to get a passport card and what is a passport card? Let’s explain. There is a small difference between a passport card and a passport book. The purpose of a passport card is pretty much the same as that of a passport book. The first thing that differs is its size. It is considerably smaller and has a chip called RFID which stands for Radio Frequency Identification. It is cheaper than regular passport, but its use is limited only to borderline with four countries thus it cannot be used for international traveling.

The basic idea of creating this card was to enable people who live within border areas to travel more easily. It is limited to U.S. – Mexican border, U.S. – Canada border, U.S.-Caribbean border and the border with Bermuda.

So how long does it take to get one? It all depends on the time you apply for it. The procedure is very similar to that of applying for a regular passport book. The time that is needed to get one varies from four weeks to almost three months. It depends on when you have applied for it. To be more precise, it depends on the requirements that are in force at the time of your applying.
