Common Causes of Night Sweats in Men

What Are the Causes of Night Sweats in Men?

Here you can read about common causes of night sweats in men. Sleep hyperhidrosis, commonly known as night sweats, can be caused by several different factors. Though it’s more often associated with women going through menopause, it can also affect men.

• There are many explanations for night sweats. Sometimes, night sweats are relatively harmless, but sometimes they can be signs of serious problems. It can be a genetic problem, as well. In that case, there are no severe consequences. It’s important to make the difference between night sweats caused by medical reasons and night sweats that occur simply because it is too hot in the bedroom.

• Certain medications can cause night sweats. This is a well know side effect of some antidepressant medications, like Sertraline. Some studies have shown that up to 22% of people who were taking antidepressant drugs had night sweats. When there are no other symptoms or signs of a tumor or infection, medications are usually considered the causes of night sweats. Insulin and other types of anti-diabetic medications may induce hypoglycemia (low blood glucose), which can also cause sweating.

• A very common cause for night sweats in men is a decrease in their testosterone levels. This can be seen in men over the age of 50. The levels of testosterone decrease naturally with age; this decrease, which some doctors call “andropause”, is not as severe and quick as in women going through menopause. However, it can still cause men to have hot flashes and night sweats. Some studies show that this affects only some 5% of the male population. There are other hormonal disorders that can cause sweating, such as carcinoid syndrome, hyperthyroidism or pheochromocytoma.

• Stress is another very common cause for night sweats. Stressful situations put the whole body in tension, increasing the heart rate, raising the adrenaline levels and disturbing the nerves connected to the sweat glands. All this can originate excessive sweating during the night. Stressful periods at work or personal problems can therefore be responsible for it.

• There are other more serious issues that can cause night sweats in men. For example, these are early symptoms of some types of cancer; the most common cancer associated with night sweats is lymphoma. In these cases, the sweating will be accompanied by other symptoms, like an unexplained weight loss and fever.

• Some infections can also cause night sweats. Tuberculosis is on of the infections that can cause night sweats in men. There are others, such as endocarditis or osteomyelitis. HIV is also known to cause night sweats.

Whatever the reason is, any man who suffers from night sweats regularly should consult a doctor. Even though the most probable causes are genetics or hormonal activity, excessive sweating in men can also be a symptom of more serious conditions, so it is important to determine what the problem is. Visit your doctor to solve this problem.
