408 Area Code

The 408 area code is a North American (California) code, covering San Jose, Santa Clara, Gilroy, Los Gatos, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Morgan Hill, Cupertino, Monte Sereno and Milpitas. This area code was made in 1959 by splitting 415. As the population were growing and so as use of other communication means (pagers, fax machines and cell phones), it was necessary to split some area codes. In 1998, the 408 was split and the 831 was created to be used in Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz.
